Artificial Intelligence and Business

Advancement in AI- a Business Perspective

Back in the 1800s, when the industrial revolution happened, many speculated of losing their jobs due to automation, that is, the assembly line. Yes, many lost their jobs but eventually, many more jobs came up. And it certainly gave businesses a chance to flourish under this new bandwagon and so did our society.

Fast forward to the 1900s, when the computer revolution happened, people again feared losing their jobs because of the ease of computational work a computer could do. What happened then was we saw a whole new world of opportunities where everyone contributed as per his/her capabilities and thus we see a connected world today. Again businesses, using this shift, helped to better our society.

Advancement in AI (Artificial Intelligence), in the present world, has got the similar properties to what the industrial revolution and computer revolution had back then. People have already made a notion that their jobs are under threat due to AI. While it may take some jobs away, it also opens up the possibility for completely new jobs that have not existed prior. Certainly, AI has benefited businesses around the world; cutting their costs, driving innovation in the services and so, in every field they introduce AI.

Possibilities of AI in Business

Although it has got several possibilities at different stages of a business where one could utilize its potential to upgrade the product and services provided to the customer. Enterprises can employ AI for everything from mining social data to driving engagement in customer relationship management (CRM) to optimizing logistics and efficiency when it comes to tracking and managing assets. AI is helping us to make our existing technology smarter and unlocking the power of all the data that enterprises collect. It has become mainstream where companies are looking for ways to market it to more people, turning it into an umbrella term. It has already started to make its impact in several fields:

  • Algorithmic trading, when started around 2005’s, represented about 3% of the activities of the banks, now it’s almost 90%.
  • Testing of drone delivery systems has already touched the prime level.
  • In an interview, Boeing Chief said: “They are in the baby stages and are advancing towards pilot-less flights”.
  • The latest research in AI claims to accurately predict a person’s lifespan.
  • AI is extending its arm in the health care sector in diagnosing and treatment of patients.

Possibilities are immense for AI to penetrate itself into our life but it’s the proactive readiness that is to be needed to make the transition a smoother one.

AI versus Job Loss

Jobs Disruption Survey of nearly 11,000 employees in India, by ET online, has found that a large number of employees see automation taking away their jobs. Looking at this survey results one may take out that people in India see automation as a real threat and they know about the tough business scenario lying ahead of them and how AI is going to affect their lives.
Likewise, a recent report by Francis Employment Council determined that in France about 10% of the jobs will disappear, 50% will be transformed and the remaining 40% would not change. These numbers scare the working group of the people whose living may come under the radar unless a proper upgrading of skills is not done on time.

Advancements in the machine language have made machines more responsive and more efficient when compared to regular human workers. Personal care robots and Drone delivery systems are some of the few examples where machines have already started replacing us. What is remarkable is that contrary to the popular belief, many high-paid jobs will also disappear, as we saw with financial traders. One should never forget that we are just witnessing, what we call the nascent stage of AI. More advanced stages of AI are Strong AI and SuperIntelligence AI and with this speed in the advancement of AI, we are not far from achieving that and we could just imagine its impact on us.

At the same time, it is quite hard to predict how many jobs will actually be created, but some are already starting to appear, such as AI Supervisor (who double-checks the results of AI), Data Labeler (most likely the factory jobs of the future), AI Lawyer (one who defends the machine rights), etc.

The magnitude of the impact of AI in the next decade is way beyond anything we could ever imagine. It is the real issue facing our leaders today as failure to transition to a sustainable AI society will lead to massive job loss and economic downturn.

Business and Society

We are in a new world where the continuous evolution of digital capabilities is pushing businesses to rethink strategies to deal with customers, competitors, products, and partners. With the technical advancement, with AI, business advancement is also needed. That said, it does not mean we should overlook the advancement of society and its people.

With humongous job loss on the trail, AI has been looked upon as a villain, or as a fearsome competitor. And if this trend continues we would be losing our possible customers of the future. And so across several businesses, company’s leaders, senior executives are in a dilemma of how to create transformative experiences and business models that improve their customers’ lives, drive growth and boost productivity.

Advancements in technology are not the only way with what our society is going to prosper together with the machines. The government should define a strategy and try to make a society where humans and machines prosper together.
