Decoding Narendra Modi's Speech

Prime Minister of India

The most anticipated speech of the prime minister, we all have been waiting for, came at 10:00 AM today. After following every other instruction he gave earlier to the citizens of the country during the lockdown, many were excited to listen to what the prime of the country had to say on the ongoing pandemic and what decisions he had taken to tackle it. While others had anticipated an extension of the lockdown given the gradual rise of the COVID-19 cases in the country despite lockdown.

Although a nearly half an hour speech of the PM gave few answers to the problems the business environment is facing due to the lockdown, he gave several pointers for the crisis communication every brand and marketer should look upon. Therefore, I have decoded his speech structure into 7 parts.

People

The prime minister started his speech by praising citizens for their efforts in following and respecting the lockdown. He also acknowledged the hardships people are facing due to it and felt sorry and asked for forgiveness for all the troubles.

India

He brought the patriotism angle while addressing the citizens and explained how the citizen’s contribution and discipline had helped and saved the country from a much larger outbreak and disorder.

Compare

He explained how the proactive measures, taken by the government, had helped in controlling the spread within the country. The PM compared the country’s current situation with other countries in dealing with the pandemic and told how India is far ahead of other countries because of the measures taken.

Acknowledge and Appreciate

The prime minister acknowledged the efforts of several organizations in helping people with food and shelter. He also informed the citizens of how hospitals and several organizations were at war with coronavirus by treating people.

Economy

Although he talked briefly about the economy, he informed that, currently, the life of the citizens is more important than the economy. The prime minister acknowledged that the decision was taken in consultation with several state heads and stakeholders.

Final message

The prime minister announced an extension of lockdown until 3rd May 2020.
  • Cheatsheet - Anticipating unrest in the public, due to an extension of the lockdown, he came up with a cheat sheet. “Be inside your doors till 20th April, and if cases are controlled or reduced, there might be lenience but with some restrictions.”
  • Daily wage workers - He further explained that this leniency would be done to help daily wage workers. He made daily wage workers as a part of his family and told that their well-being was an utmost priority to him.
  • Young scientists - He further asked and encouraged youngsters/young scientists to come up with solutions to tackle the situation for the benefit of mankind.

And finally, Saat Baat Aapka Sath

He summarised his speech with a list of things to do in this lockdown.
  • Take care of old people.
  • Follow lockdown and social distancing guidelines.
  • Boost Immunity.
  • Download Arogya Setu app.
  • Help poor families.
  • Don’t cut jobs.
  • Respect doctors, nurses, policemen, and sanitary workers.
There is a thing in the communication of our prime minister, Mr. Narendra Modi; he never promises anything from his end, but he always asks for citizens' time and patience. He makes people more valuable and desirable. He gives power to the citizens.
